Anatole de Sand
"It's inevitable that others will judge children on the actions of their parents. I find it stifling, sometimes. But that isn't our responsibility to carry, nor defy, nor confirm. We are simply who we are; those who see us for that are the ones that can be our lifelong companions. Those who do not rule themselves out."

PERSONALITY
Anatole presents as a very prim, proper, and formal young man. He was raised in nobility, with all that entails, and he took to it well, especially since he idolized how much of a gentleman his father was. "Gentlemanly" is something very important to him, and while he doesn't obsess over it nor hold it in absolute esteem -- he's more than willing to do "ungentlemanly" things when necessary and without hesitation -- he does believe that it's the proper way to act in normal situations. He has no qualms with those who think differently, especially considering his father's friends and adoptive uncles, but for he himself, Anatole believes acting proper and lord-like is very important when circumstances allow it.

That's not to say he's soft-handed, however. From both parents, he learned the value of hard, personal work, of the importance of doing things himself instead of leaving it to servants or hired hands, and of how much better it felt to get things done himself. From Evangaline, who came from common stock, he also learned dirtier work, how to handle it, and more than a few ways of how to clean clothing to make it pristine, no matter how filthy it got. In fact, even though he lives in enough luxury that servants take care of most chores, Anatole prefers to handle them himself every so often just to make sure he can do it well in case he ever needs to rely on only himself or pull his weight in a group.

In most cases, he is kind, polite, and respectful to people, even those that might be rude or rough at first. This can range from genuine, warm politeness to icy, "I'm going to make you mad by refusing to stoop to your level" politeness, but he does try to hold it when he can. Of course, he can only go so far with that, and once he begins feeling strong negative emotions (if he's offended, or upset, or enraged), things change. He's inherited the temper of both of his parents, and when angry, Anatole can and will curse, insult people, and talk down to them. He never does it without cause, but if someone's gotten on his bad side, they're going to know it -- and one sure fire way to get there is to insult his family or friends, adopted or blood.

The one exception to all of this is if Anatole is deeply shaken. While he has trained a lot and done all he can to prepare himself for various things, he is still just a teenager, and there are things in the world that can knock him off balance. When that happens, his control breaks down and he can freeze and become mute, stutter and stumble over his words, struggle to articulate himself, and even outright panic. If someone else is with him, they can shake him out of it and he can regain his footing, but he will remain shaken up until he has time to process and deal with things, which can still affect his performances in what's going on.
